About this City

Schwerin is the capital and second-largest city of the German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. With a population of approximately 95,000, it is known as the "City of Seven Lakes" due to its picturesque location surrounded by Lake Schwerin and numerous smaller lakes. The city's most famous landmark is Schwerin Castle (Schweriner Schloss), a fairy-tale palace located on an island in Lake Schwerin. Often referred to as the "Neuschwanstein of the North," this magnificent castle combines Renaissance, Baroque, and Romantic styles and currently houses the state parliament. The city's history dates back to 1018 when it was founded as a Slavic settlement. Throughout the centuries, Schwerin served as the residence of the Dukes and Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg until 1918. The historic old town features well-preserved buildings from various periods, including the neo-Gothic Schwerin Cathedral and numerous examples of 19th-century architecture. Today, Schwerin is a cultural center with a state theater, state museum, and various cultural festivals throughout the year. The city is surrounded by natural beauty, with extensive parks, gardens, and protected nature areas that make it a popular destination for both residents and tourists seeking relaxation and outdoor activities.
