About this City

Erfurt is the capital and largest city of the German state of Thuringia, with a population of approximately 215,000. Founded in 742 CE, it is one of the oldest cities in central Germany and boasts one of the best-preserved medieval city centers in the country. Erfurt's skyline is dominated by the impressive ensemble of Erfurt Cathedral (Erfurter Dom) and St. Severus Church, both towering over the large Domplatz (Cathedral Square). The city is perhaps best known for the Krämerbrücke (Merchants' Bridge), a unique medieval bridge entirely lined with inhabited half-timbered buildings. It is the longest inhabited bridge in Europe, dating back to the 12th century. Erfurt has significant historical importance as the place where Martin Luther studied at the university and later became a monk at the Augustinian Monastery, which still stands today. The city was also an important trading center during the Middle Ages due to its location on major trade routes and its woad plant production, which provided a valuable blue dye. Today, Erfurt is a vibrant cultural center with numerous theaters, festivals, and museums, as well as being an economic hub for Thuringia with strengths in microelectronics, semiconductor manufacturing, and horticulture.
