Brühl
Welcome to Brühl
Historic city in North Rhine-Westphalia, home to world-famous Phantasialand theme park and UNESCO World Heritage castles.
Brühl is a charming small town in the Rhein-Erft-Kreis, located between Cologne and Bonn in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Despite its modest size, this historic destination packs an extraordinary amount into a single visit: a UNESCO World Heritage ensemble of 18th-century Rococo palaces, one of Europe’s most celebrated amusement parks, and the world’s only museum devoted to Surrealist artist Max Ernst, who was born here in 1891. Few towns anywhere in Germany offer tourist attractions of this quality and variety within such easy reach of a major city.
Why Visit Brühl
Brühl offers a rare combination: UNESCO World Heritage architecture, a world-class Phantasialand theme park, and a charming town centre all within a 20-minute train ride from Cologne. Whether you are travelling with family, interested in Baroque and Rococo history, or planning a cultural day trip, this small town delivers far beyond expectations.
- UNESCO World Heritage since 1984 — the Augustusburg and Falkenlust palaces are regarded as the first significant Rococo creations in Germany, among the most important Baroque buildings in the country.
- Phantasialand amusement park — a globally ranked theme park with immersive themed worlds praised for Disney-level theming density on a compact footprint.
- Max Ernst Museum Brühl des LVR — the only museum in the world dedicated entirely to the Dadaist and Surrealist master, born in Brühl in 1891.
- Effortless day trip from Cologne — roughly 15–20 minutes by regional train from Cologne Central Station, equally close to Bonn.
- Walkable city centre — the palace, formal gardens, old town and museum sit within a compact, walkable radius around the train station.
Augustusburg and Falkenlust Palaces
The Brühl World Heritage site is not a single building but a three-part ensemble: Augustusburg Palace, the Falkenlust hunting lodge, and the formal French baroque gardens that connect them. UNESCO inscribed the site in 1984 as the earliest and finest examples of 18th-century Rococo architecture in Germany — one of only six World Heritage sites in North Rhine-Westphalia. The palaces celebrated their 40th anniversary as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2024.
Augustusburg Palace
Augustusburg was built as the lavish summer residence of the prince-archbishops of Cologne. Construction began under architect Johann Conrad Schlaun and was completed by François de Cuvilliés, whose decorated interiors set the template that German princely courts copied for generations. The magnificent staircase hall by Balthasar Neumann is the showstopper: a theatrical cascade of marble, stucco and ceiling fresco that visitors consistently rank among the finest Baroque interiors in Europe. Prince-Elector Clemens August of Bavaria commissioned much of the palace as we see it today, making his name inseparable from Brühl’s history.
Falkenlust Hunting Lodge
Falkenlust is the intimate counterpoint to Augustusburg’s grandeur. This small Rococo palace was built by François de Cuvilliés between 1729 and 1737 for Prince-Elector Clemens August, who used it as a private retreat for falconry. The Falkenluster Allee, a straight tree-lined avenue, connects the two parks and makes for a pleasant 25–30 minute walk between the Augustusburg palace gardens and the Falkenlust palace grounds. Visiting both in sequence gives the clearest sense of how this UNESCO World Heritage ensemble was designed as a unified aristocratic landscape.

Phantasialand Theme Park
Phantasialand is the reason many international visitors first hear the name Brühl. This amusement park is divided into distinct themed worlds — China Town, Deep in Africa, Mystery, Fantasy, Berlin, Klugheim and Rookburgh — and is consistently ranked among Europe’s finest theme parks, not for sheer ride count but for the richness of its immersive theming. Family visitors, thrill-seekers and architecture enthusiasts alike find something to love. The park is famous for operating on-site themed hotels including Ling Bao, Matamba and the Charles Lindbergh hotel, making it equally suitable for an overnight stay as a day trip from Cologne or Bonn.

The permanent exhibition Max Ernst — Life and Work presents around 250 paintings, sculptures, collages and graphics spanning 70 years of creative output, from his early Rhineland years through his central role in French Surrealism, his wartime exile in the United States, and his return to Europe in 1953. Rotating special exhibitions show works from modern and contemporary art alongside the permanent collection.
