About this Destination
A Fortress in the Clouds
Rising majestically from a conical hilltop in the Swabian Alps, Hohenzollern Castle is the very picture of a commanding fortress. Unlike the romantic fantasy of Neuschwanstein, this castle is a powerful symbol of dynastic power and Prussian history. It is the ancestral seat of the House of Hohenzollern, the royal family that included the kings of Prussia and the last German emperors.
Three Castles in One
The current structure is actually the third castle to stand on this site. The first was destroyed in the 15th century, and the second fell into ruin. The present-day castle was rebuilt in the 19th century in the Gothic Revival style, intended as a family memorial. When the family flag is flying from the tower, it signifies that the current owners are in residence.
Commanding Views
Its stunning location offers a majestic panoramic view that can stretch for over 100 kilometers on a clear day. The approach to the castle is dramatic, with the road winding up the steep hillside, building anticipation for the fortress that awaits at the summit.
Royal Treasures
A visit includes a tour of the opulent show rooms, filled with art, historical artifacts, and even the crown of the Prussian kings. The castle's collection includes personal effects of Frederick the Great and a letter from George Washington thanking Baron von Steuben (a Prussian) for his service in the American Revolution.
Living History
With over 300,000 visitors each year, it is one of Germany's most popular castles. The castle frequently hosts concerts, open-air cinemas, and one of Germany's most beautiful Christmas markets, making it not just a museum but a living cultural center.
