About this Destination
The Reichstag building is home to the German Bundestag (Parliament) and one of Berlin's most significant historical buildings. Originally constructed in 1894, the building has witnessed much of Germany's turbulent history, including the proclamation of the German Republic in 1918, a devastating fire in 1933 that the Nazis used as a pretext to seize power, and severe damage during World War II. After German reunification, the building was completely renovated by British architect Sir Norman Foster, featuring the addition of the magnificent glass dome that has become an architectural symbol of Berlin. The dome offers visitors a 360-degree view of the surrounding cityscape and has an ingenious energy design that helps minimize the building's carbon footprint. Directly below the dome, visitors can look down into the plenary chamber where parliamentary debates take place, symbolizing transparency in government. The building also retains many historical elements, including graffiti left by Soviet soldiers after the Battle of Berlin. Today, the Reichstag is not only a working parliamentary building but also one of Berlin's most popular tourist attractions, with over 3 million visitors each year. Advance registration is required to visit the dome and roof terrace.
