Eltz Castle, Wierschem

Burg Eltz, often described as the quintessential German castle, stands in a secluded valley near the Moselle River in Rhineland-Palatinate. Unlike many castles in Germany, Eltz Castle has never been destroyed throughout its 850-year history, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into medieval castle life without the reconstruction often necessary at other historic sites. Since the 12th century, it has remained in the continuous ownership of the same family, now in its 33rd generation of the Eltz lineage. The castle's distinctive appearance stems from its unusual construction, with eight residential towers rising up to ten stories high. This unique structure resulted from the castle being shared among three branches of the Eltz family from the 13th century onwards, with each branch occupying and developing its own section. This arrangement, known as a "Ganerbenburg" (castle of joint heirs), created the castle's asymmetrical, almost organic appearance as it evolved over centuries. Visitors approach Eltz Castle via a forested path, with the medieval structure dramatically revealing itself nestled in a valley, seemingly emerging from the surrounding landscape. This approach adds to the castle's fairy-tale quality and has made it a popular subject for photographers and artists. Inside, the castle houses an impressive collection of original furnishings, weapons, armor, and art spanning eight centuries, offering insights into the lifestyle of German nobility across different eras. Particularly noteworthy interiors include the Knights' Hall with its preserved medieval hunting frescoes, the armory with its collection of historic weapons, and the treasury containing gold and silverwork, jewelry, and porcelain. The kitchens, living quarters, and bedchambers provide a vivid picture of daily life within the castle walls throughout different periods of history. Eltz Castle's remarkable state of preservation can be attributed not only to its secluded location, which protected it from warfare, but also to the family's careful stewardship and their diplomatic skills in navigating changing political landscapes over the centuries. The surrounding area, known as the Eltz Forest, is a nature reserve featuring hiking trails that offer various picturesque viewpoints of the castle.
