About this Region

Bremen is a city-state in northern Germany and the smallest of Germany's 16 federal states. It consists of two separated enclaves: the city of Bremen and the seaport city of Bremerhaven, which is located about 60 kilometers north at the mouth of the Weser River on the North Sea. Bremen has a rich Hanseatic history dating back over 1,200 years and is known officially as the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. The city of Bremen is famous for its historic market square with the UNESCO World Heritage Town Hall and the statue of the Bremen Town Musicians from the Brothers Grimm fairy tale. Economically, Bremen is an important commercial and industrial hub with a focus on maritime industries, aerospace engineering, food production, and automotive manufacturing. The port of Bremerhaven is one of the most important container terminals in Europe. Despite its small size of just 419 square kilometers, Bremen plays a significant role in Germany's economy and cultural landscape.
