About this Destination
Schwerin Castle (Schweriner Schloss) is a magnificent palace situated on an island in Lake Schwerin that serves as one of Germany's most significant examples of romantic historicism architecture. Often referred to as the "Neuschwanstein of the North," this fairytale-like structure is the symbol of the city of Schwerin and the entire Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania region. The site has been home to a fortress since at least 973 CE, but the current castle largely dates from the mid-to-late 19th century when Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II of Mecklenburg-Schwerin commissioned a complete reconstruction in the style of French Renaissance chateaux. The castle features numerous towers, golden domes, ornate gables, and is richly decorated with historicist elements including Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque details. Surrounded by water and set within meticulously landscaped gardens designed by Peter Joseph Lenné, the castle's picturesque setting enhances its romantic appearance. Inside, visitors can explore over 20 ornately designed rooms, including the Throne Room, the ancestral gallery, and the Golden Hall. Since 1990, the castle has served as the seat of the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, making it one of the few historic castles in Germany still used for government purposes. A museum occupies a significant portion of the building, displaying an extensive collection of 19th-century crafts and paintings. Adding to the castle's mystique is the legend of Pütter, a small castle ghost said to perform mischievous deeds. During summer months, the surrounding gardens host open-air concerts and cultural events, while the nearby castle island theater stages performances year-round. For visitors, Schwerin Castle offers a unique combination of architectural splendor, cultural heritage, and natural beauty, making it one of the most visited landmarks in northern Germany.
