About this Destination
Sanssouci Palace is a historical landmark in Potsdam, just outside Berlin, that served as the summer retreat of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia, in the 18th century. The name "Sanssouci" is French for "without worries," reflecting the king's desire for a private refuge away from the formality of the Berlin court. Built between 1745 and 1747, the palace is a masterpiece of Rococo architecture, designed by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff. Unlike other grand royal residences of the time, Sanssouci is relatively modest in size, consisting of just ten principal rooms. Its single-story design, yellow exterior, and graceful dome make it instantly recognizable. The palace sits atop terraced vineyards in the vast Sanssouci Park, which covers over 287 hectares. The park features numerous architectural treasures, including the larger New Palace, the Chinese House, the Roman Baths, the Orangery, and the Picture Gallery, which was the first purpose-built museum in Germany. Frederick the Great was a passionate patron of the arts and philosophy, hosting the likes of Voltaire at Sanssouci. His personal touch is evident throughout the palace, particularly in the library and music room, reflecting his intellectual interests. The interior is sumptuously decorated with marble, gilded ornaments, painted ceilings, and exquisite furniture. A notable feature is the Round Table Room, designed for intimate dinner conversations with the king's close friends and intellectuals. Frederick loved the palace so much that he requested to be buried there, a wish that was finally fulfilled in 1991 following German reunification. Together with its gardens and park, Sanssouci was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990 and is now part of the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg. It attracts approximately 2 million visitors annually, making it one of the most popular tourist destinations in Germany.
