About Rhine in Flames
Rhine in Flames (Rhein in Flammen) is one of Germany's most spectacular outdoor events, consisting of a series of coordinated fireworks displays and illuminated ship parades along the Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The event takes place on several weekends between May and September each year in different locations along the Rhine River, including Bonn, Bingen/Rüdesheim, Koblenz, Oberwesel, and St. Goar/St. Goarshausen. Each location features its own unique charm and setting, often against the backdrop of illuminated castles, historic towns, and vineyards. During the events, dozens of decorated and illuminated ships form a convoy traveling along the river while synchronized fireworks are launched from the shores, castles, and hills above. Tens of thousands of spectators gather along the riverbanks and at designated viewing points, while others experience the spectacle from aboard the ships in the parade. The tradition began in 1756 to celebrate the wine harvest, though the modern event in its current form dates to 1931. Today, Rhine in Flames combines historic tradition with modern pyrotechnic artistry and has become a symbol of the romantic Rhine region, drawing visitors from around the world. The events often include wine festivals, live music, and cultural performances in the participating towns.
