About Bayreuth Festival

The Bayreuth Festival is the world's most prestigious Wagner opera festival, held annually in Bayreuth, Bavaria since 1876. Founded by Richard Wagner himself, the festival takes place in the specially designed Bayreuth Festspielhaus, which Wagner built specifically for performing his operas with perfect acoustics. The festival runs for about one month each summer (typically July and August) and exclusively performs Wagner's mature operas. The waiting list for tickets is legendary, often extending 10-20 years. The event attracts opera enthusiasts, celebrities, and dignitaries from around the world, making it one of the most exclusive cultural events in Germany. The Festspielhaus features Wagner's innovative design with covered orchestra pit, creating a unique sound that enhances the dramatic effect of his music dramas. The festival has premiered many of Wagner's works and continues to present innovative productions by leading directors and conductors. The festival has been led by Wagner's descendants for most of its history, currently under the direction of Katharina Wagner, the composer's great-great-granddaughter. Each production runs for several years, with only a few new productions each season, maintaining the highest artistic standards. Beyond the performances, the festival creates a unique atmosphere in Bayreuth, with the entire town revolving around Wagner and opera during the festival months.
