Where German History Was Written
Perched high above the town of Eisenach in Thuringia, Wartburg Castle is more than just a beautiful fortress; it is one of the most significant sites in German history and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its history is deeply intertwined with two pivotal moments in German culture.
The Minstrels' Contest
In the 13th century, it was the setting for the legendary Sängerkrieg, or Minstrels' Contest, an event immortalized in Wagner's opera Tannhäuser. The greatest minnesingers of the age supposedly gathered here to compete in a contest of song, with their lives hanging in the balance.
Luther's Sanctuary
Its most famous resident, however, was Martin Luther. In 1521, after being excommunicated by the Pope and declared an outlaw by the Emperor, Luther was given refuge here by Frederick the Wise. Hiding out under the pseudonym "Junker Jörg," he used his ten months of confinement to undertake one of the most important acts of the Protestant Reformation: translating the New Testament from Greek into German.

This act not only made the Bible accessible to common people but also played a crucial role in standardizing the modern German language. Visitors can see the modest room where he worked, a powerful and atmospheric space that changed the course of Western history.
