A Labyrinth of Canals and Sorbian Culture
Just an hour's train ride southeast of Berlin lies a landscape that feels like another world entirely. The Spreewald is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, a unique inland delta where the Spree River splinters into a labyrinthine network of hundreds of serene canals and waterways that meander through lush forests and traditional farmland.
Venice of the Forest
For centuries, this watery maze served as the primary mode of transportation, with boats used for everything from delivering mail to taking children to school. Even today, some houses can only be reached by water, and the mail is still delivered by boat in the village of Lehde.
Traditional Boat Tours
The best way to experience the Spreewald's tranquil beauty is by boat. Visitors can rent a canoe or kayak to explore on their own or, for a more relaxing experience, take a traditional punt tour (Kahnfahrt). A local ferryman poles the flat-bottomed boat through the canals, sharing stories and anecdotes about the region's history and culture.
Sorbian Heritage
The Spreewald is also the heartland of the Sorbs (or Wends), a recognized Slavic minority with their own language, traditions, and distinct culture. This heritage is visible in the bilingual town signs, traditional costumes, and unique customs, such as the intricate art of decorating Easter eggs. Visitors can learn about Sorbian culture at open-air museums and during traditional festivals.
Famous Pickles
The region is also famous for its pickles (Spreewälder Gurken), a culinary specialty protected by the EU. These gherkins have been cultivated in the Spreewald for centuries, and visitors can tour pickle farms and taste various varieties at local markets.
Natural Paradise
Beyond its cultural attractions, the Spreewald is a haven for nature lovers. The biosphere reserve protects diverse ecosystems, including wetlands, meadows, and alder forests. It's home to numerous bird species, otters, and a rich variety of plant life, making it perfect for wildlife watching and nature photography.
