Mummelsee Lake

Mystical glacial lake in the Black Forest surrounded by legends of water spirits, mermaids, and the underwater king.

About this Destination

Mummelsee is a mystical glacial lake located on the western mountainside of the Hornisgrinde in the Northern Black Forest. At 1,036 meters above sea level, this 17-meter-deep cirque lake is the deepest and largest of seven glacial lakes in the Black Forest, with a circumference of 800 meters and covering 3.7 hectares. The lake is a remnant from the last ice ages and has captured imaginations for centuries with its rich folklore and legends. According to local mythology, the Mummelsee is inhabited by a Nix and the King of the Mummelsee, an underwater ruler who lives in a magnificent crystal castle beneath the dark waters. The lake spirits, known as Mummlein, are said to dwell in the unfathomable depths alongside magical gardens where blood-red coral grows next to fragrant water lilies. These legends have inspired famous German writers including Eduard Morike and Grimmelshausen. The lake offers various activities including swimming, boat rentals, and hiking along the sculpture path that features 18 art installations visualizing the connection between nature, landscape, and art. The circular walking path was reconstructed in 2014 to be barrier-free. Multiple hiking trails pass by the lake, including the famous Westweg long-distance trail. A hotel and restaurant provide accommodation and dining options for visitors seeking to fully immerse themselves in this mystical location.
