Kiel

Kiel is the capital and most populous city of the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein. With around 250,000 inhabitants, it is Germany's largest city on the Baltic Sea and the country's only state capital located directly on the sea. Founded in 1242 and a member of the Hanseatic League since 1284, Kiel transformed into a major naval center in the 19th century. In 1871, Emperor William I designated Kiel as one of Germany's "Imperial War Harbours," establishing its importance for maritime defense and shipbuilding. The city sits on the Kieler Förde, a 17-kilometer fjord-like inlet shaped by glacial movement. The Kiel Canal, the world's busiest artificial waterway, connects the Baltic and North seas and has its eastern terminus in Kiel's Holtenau district. Kiel is internationally famous for Kiel Week (Kieler Woche), the world's largest sailing event, held annually in the last week of June. This spectacular maritime festival attracts over 5,000 sailors, 2,000 ships, and three million visitors from around the globe. The city is home to the University of Kiel (founded 1665), one of Germany's oldest universities, and GEOMAR, one of the world's leading ocean research centers.
