Oktoberfest began in 1810 as a royal wedding celebration for Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. The citizens of Munich were invited to join the festivities, which included horse races and beer.

Modern Oktoberfest

Today, Oktoberfest is the world's largest beer festival, attracting over 6 million visitors annually. The festival runs for 16-18 days, ending on the first Sunday in October.
