About Dresden Striezelmarkt
The Dresden Striezelmarkt is one of Germany's oldest and most traditional Christmas markets, with a history dating back to 1434. Named after the Dresden Stollen (originally called "Striezel"), this market transforms Dresden's Altmarkt square into a magical Christmas wonderland from late November through Christmas Eve.
The market is famous for several unique traditions:
- The world's largest Stollen cake ceremony during the annual Stollenfest
- Traditional wooden Christmas decorations and toys
- The Striezelmarkt pyramid, a large wooden structure with moving figures
- Handcrafted ornaments and gifts from local artisans
Over 240 stalls offer traditional German Christmas treats including Glühwein (mulled wine), roasted almonds, gingerbread, and regional specialties. The market also features live music, children's activities, and demonstrations of traditional crafts such as candle making and wood carving.
The Dresden Striezelmarkt is particularly renowned for maintaining authentic German Christmas traditions, with many vendors selling only handmade items produced locally or regionally. The market's historic setting in Dresden's beautifully reconstructed old town, with the Frauenkirche and Dresden Castle as backdrops, creates an enchanting atmosphere that attracts visitors from around the world.
This market represents the heart of Saxon Christmas culture and continues the centuries-old tradition of providing communities with handcrafted goods and seasonal treats during the Advent season.
