Goslar

UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe-Stadt am Harz mit tausendjähriger Bergbaugeschichte

Über diese Stadt

Imperial City of the Harz

A UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the foothills of the Harz Mountains, Goslar is a historically important town with a beautifully preserved medieval core. For over 200 years, it was the seat of the Holy Roman Emperors, and its wealth was built on the rich silver and ore deposits of the nearby Rammelsberg Mine.

Mining Heritage

The Rammelsberg Mine was in continuous operation for over 1,000 years before closing in 1988, making it one of the oldest industrial operations in the world. Today, the mine is part of the UNESCO site and offers fascinating underground tours where visitors can explore different mining eras, from medieval shafts to 20th-century industrial installations.

Imperial Palace

The impressive Imperial Palace (Kaiserpfalz) stands as a testament to Goslar's powerful past. Built in the 11th century, it was a favorite residence of German emperors. The restored palace features the enormous Imperial Hall with its romanticized 19th-century paintings depicting scenes from German history and legend.

Medieval Splendor

The heart of Goslar is its picturesque Marktplatz (Market Square), surrounded by historic buildings including the Gothic Town Hall and the elaborately decorated Kaiserworth, a former guildhall for cloth merchants. The square's fountain features a golden eagle, the symbol of the empire, topped by Goslar's trademark figure: a buttocks-baring miner.

Architectural Treasures

The town is filled with crooked, half-timbered houses and narrow, cobbled streets that invite exploration. Notable buildings include the Siemenshaus, the ancestral home of the industrial dynasty, and numerous medieval churches. The carillon on the market square performs four times daily with figures depicting the history of mining in the Harz.

Gateway to Adventure

Goslar serves as an excellent base for exploring the Harz Mountains, including trips to the legendary Brocken peak. The combination of imperial history and industrial heritage makes Goslar unique among German towns, offering insights into both the heights of medieval power and the foundations of modern industry.
