Dresden is the capital city of the German state of Saxony and its second most populous city, with around 556,000 inhabitants. Known as the "Florence on the Elbe," Dresden is famous for its baroque architecture, world-class museums, and cultural heritage. The city's historic center was largely destroyed during World War II but has been meticulously reconstructed, including the famous Frauenkirche and the Dresden Castle. Dresden is home to numerous museums, including the Green Vault (Grünes Gewölbe), one of Europe's richest treasure chambers, and the Old Masters Picture Gallery. The city is also known for its Christmas market, one of Germany's oldest and most traditional.
