Bremen

Historic Hanseatic city-state and UNESCO World Heritage site, famous for the Bremen Town Musicians fairy tale.

Über diese Stadt

Bremen is a major cultural and economic hub in northwestern Germany and one of the country's 16 federal states. With over 577,000 inhabitants, it is the 11th-largest city in Germany and the second-largest in Northern Germany after $1. As a founding member of the Hanseatic League, Bremen has been a free city for over 1,200 years. The city's historic market square, featuring the UNESCO World Heritage Town Hall and Roland statue, represents one of the finest examples of civic autonomy in medieval Europe. The Bremen Town Hall (built 1405-1410) is the only town hall in the world to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Roland statue, erected in 1404, stands as a symbol of the city's independence and trading rights. Bremen is immortalized in the Brothers Grimm fairy tale "The Bremen Town Musicians," commemorated by Gerhard Marcks' bronze sculpture in front of the Town Hall. The historic Schnoor quarter, with its narrow medieval streets, and the Art Nouveau Böttcherstraße are among the city's most charming districts. Today, Bremen successfully combines its rich maritime heritage with modern industry, research, and aerospace technology, making it a dynamic center for education and innovation.
