Bamberg

UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe-Stadt in Oberfranken mit mittelalterlicher Altstadt und Rauchbier-Tradition

Über diese Stadt

The Franconian Rome on Seven Hills

Bamberg is a unique architectural masterpiece and a city that feels like a fusion of different European ideals. Built on seven hills, it earned the nickname "Franconian Rome," and its entire Old Town is a beautifully preserved UNESCO World Heritage Site that miraculously survived the bombs of World War II.

A Tale of Two Cities

The city is bisected by the Regnitz River, creating distinct districts with different characters. The hill city (Bergstadt) features the magnificent cathedral and episcopal quarter, while the island city (Inselstadt) was the merchants' domain. Along the river, a row of picturesque, half-timbered fishermen's cottages known as Klein Venedig (Little Venice) creates one of Germany's most photographed scenes.

The Floating Town Hall

Perhaps the city's most iconic and curious landmark is the Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall). According to legend, the bishop of Bamberg refused to grant the citizens land for a town hall, so they defiantly built one on an artificial island in the middle of the river, connected to both banks by bridges. The building itself is a marvel, with one side covered in vibrant Baroque frescoes.

Imperial Cathedral

The city's spiritual heart is the four-spired Bamberg Cathedral, a Romanesque and Gothic structure that houses the tomb of an emperor (Henry II), a pope (Clement II), and the mysterious and famous equestrian statue known as the Bamberg Horseman, whose identity remains debated by historians.

Liquid Heritage

Beyond its architecture, Bamberg is renowned for its unique beer culture, most notably its Rauchbier (smoked beer), a dark, malty brew with a distinct smoky flavor. This local specialty, brewed using malt dried over beechwood fires, is best sampled at historic breweries like Schlenkerla, where the tradition dates back to the Middle Ages.

Garden City

A unique aspect of Bamberg's UNESCO status is the Gärtnerstadt (market gardeners' district). This area of urban agriculture, with its wide streets and traditional gardeners' houses, has been cultivated since the Middle Ages and continues to supply the city with fresh produce.
